Identify the difference between a vented or unvented hot water cylinder and find out exactly what you need for your household!

Vented hot water cylinders

A vented hot water cylinder is supplied with water from a cold water tank which is normally situated in the loft of your property.  The water is then carried through a vent pipe to the hot water cylinder. After the water is heated in the cylinder, it is either stored in your shower, bath or taps for domestic use or used to heat up your radiators. The excess water is then drained through the excess route.

Pros:

  • You will always have access to the stored water, even if your main water supply is turned off.
  • A vented hot water cylinder is both easy and cheap to maintain and install.

Cons:

  • The main disadvantage of a vented hot water cylinder is gravity. This means that the water pressure is decided by the height of your cold water tank. In other words, the taps from your first floor may have lower water pressure as opposed to the ones from downstairs. In this case, you may have to install an additional water pump to improve the pressure.

Unvented hot water cylinders

Connected right to the main water supply and without the need of a cold water tank in your loft, unvented hot water cylinders ensure a better flow rate and water pressure.

As the water is heated in the cylinder, its built-in safety features cope perfectly with excess water.

Pros:

  • The water pressure is stronger as it comes directly from the mains, however, this also depends on the power of the mains in the first place.
  • As it doesn't require a cold water tank, it takes up way less space in your property and you can decide where to install it without having to think about gravity and water pressure.
  • It is a completely sealed system so you won't have to worry about freezing in the winter.

Cons:

  • If your main power supply is turned off, you won't have any hot water.
  • There can be a compatibility risk when it comes to installing mixers and power showers.
  • They use a complex technology and the cost to maintain and install an unvented hot water cylinder is higher.

In conclusion, choosing the right type of water cylinder for your home does depend on a few aspects such as your budget, the size of your home, whether you have any existing central heating system and what kind of mains water pressure you are having.
