Heats up your home, warms your toes and saves you money on energy bills! Find out all your need to know and more about the available types of underfloor heating...

There are two types of underfloor heating systems:

Hot water (wet) underfloor heating systems

Just like your central heating system, a wet underfloor heating system uses warm water to heat up. The water circulates through small pipes that are fitted on your subfloor and covered with a heat conducting screed which once it gets warm, it efficiently retains the heat.  Wet systems are a great option if you are looking to save on energy bills, it can reduce your costs by almost 30%.

One of the main advantages of this type of underfloor heating is that it can easily be connected to your central heating system, so if you only want to heat up one room this way, it can be done.

On the other hand, because it warms up through a layer of screed, it may take up to two hours to heat completely and almost same to cool down, therefore, when it comes to getting the right temperature, sometimes this could be a challenge.

Wet underfloor heating is the ideal option if you're having a new build or you carry out a major renovation.

Electric (dry) underfloor heating systems

Modern electric underfloor heating systems are similar to a carpet underlay and can easily be spread across your existing floor on top of an insulated board and simply connected to your power supply. Because there is no layer of screed involved in the process, this type of underfloor heating can be installed under any floor type, including timber or on top of your old flooring. Electric underfloor heating systems are a bit cheaper than the wet type and require much less hassle when it comes to installation. They also warm up faster and are more responsive, however, on the long run the electric underfloor heating systems can be more expensive and you won't be able to integrate them with your existing central heating system.  You will have to set up a separate timer and thermostat.

In conclusion, one of the great benefits of both types of underfloor heating is that they require no maintenance. There are no moving parts and when it comes to wet underfloor heating, this is constantly protected by the surrounding screed. Many of these systems will come with a warranty of 10-15 years and some systems will even last up to 30 years, giving you peace of mind and an excellent, comfortable living environment.
